Figure from Shors et al. 2014. Shors and colleagues theorize that the mental health benefits of MAP training are due to neurogenesis that occurs in the hippocampus. During exercise, new neurons are formed, but many die. During mental training, more cells are kept alive. Therefore the combination of physical and mental training might help increase the number of cells produced in the hippocampus AND the number that stay alive.
